What is a Digital Strategy?

11th November 2025

Definition:

A digital strategy is an overarching long-term plan that defines how the organisation will implement and use different technologies to help achieve their strategic aims, objectives and vision.

It sets out how tools like Microsoft 365 can support the organisation’s goals, improve workflows and enable workplace teams to collaborate more effectively. Think of it as a roadmap for making technology work for your business, not the other way around.

Key Features of a Digital Strategy

Key features of a digital strategy are:

  • Vision: what do you want to achieve?
  • Guiding principles: shared approaches that will help you with decision making and prioritisation.
  • A summary of where you are now: articulating the foundation and starting point for your future plans.
  • Long term: strategic projects that will help you achieve your vision.
  • Impact: what success looks like; how will you measure it and within what timescales.

To have maximum impact, a digital strategy:

  • Is something that is done ‘with’ staff, not ‘to’ them.  They need to be committed to its aims and empowered to contribute to the plan.
  • Includes employee voice – they will be able to contribute ideas that will have maximum impact on their working practices and outcomes.
  • Is short, clearly articulated and easy to communicate to different stakeholders.  It needs to engage everyone in your shared journey.
