The Big Picture – What Digital Transformation Means for Education

It is important to understand what digital transformation involves and why it matters in schools. As a digital champion you can model best practice, mentoring colleagues and drive the culture of innovation within your school. Digital champions act as catalysts for change by sharing practical examples, offering peer support and helping to embed digital approaches that improve collaboration, inclusion and learning outcomes across the school community.

Digitisation vs Transformation

Digitisation and digital transformation may sound similar, but they represent very different approaches to technology in education. Digitisation is converting physical content into a digital format. Digital transformation, on the other hand, is a deeper shift: it reimagines teaching and learning processes to take full advantage of technology. As a digital champion, your role is to help colleagues move beyond digitisation and embrace transformation, modelling innovative practices and showing how technology can make learning more engaging, inclusive and impactful.

  • Digitisation means converting existing materials into digital format
  • Transformation is redesigning teaching and learning processes to make the most of technology. 

Digitisation Example: 

 A teacher scans a paper worksheet and uploads it to the school’s learning platform for students to download and complete. 

Transformation Example: 

Instead of a worksheet, the teacher creates an interactive quiz using a tool like Kahoot or Microsoft Forms, which provides instant feedback, adapts questions based on student responses and includes multimedia elements to enhance understanding. 

Why It Matters

  • Increases engagement and creativity 
  • Promotes flexible, inclusive learning 
  • Streamlines communication and assessment 
  • Builds pupils’ digital skills and independence
